EKE-Electronics helps you refurbish your trains in a more efficient way, giving you the opportunity to bring in the latest technology for conformity and improved performance. Trainnet® enables you to easily combine new and old technology (e.g. retrofitting), save on operations and maintenance, improve reliability and safety, improve passenger comfort and have full control by owning the intellectual property rights of your system. Our solutions are also suitable for completely new trains.


In practice, the first step is to develop a robust and efficient Train Communication Network (TCN). The Trainnet® TCN acts as the nerves of your train, connecting all sub-systems together and enabling communication between them. Trainnet® is modular and allows you to simply select the communication interfaces you need, so that you can connect all required sub-systems to Trainnet®. For example, you can freely combine bus technologies such as WTB, MVB, CAN, S/L and Ethernet. I/O interface modules can also be used to manage discrete Input and/or output signals. The Trainnet® interface module portfolio is so extensive that you can virtually connect any sub-system to Trainnet®, whether they are third party systems, new systems or old generation systems.

Trainnet® provides you with one point of control over all sub-systems what greatly simplify train architecture. The cabling and amount of hardware used are dramatically reduced, saving space and lowering the costs of installation and maintenance. Working with EKE guarantees the development of a perfectly integrated system, preventing a lack of interoperability and coordination which often occurs when working with multiple partners and technologies.


As a second step, Trainnet® can be programmed to collect and analyse data from all connected sub-systems in order to send relevant command and information across the train and beyond. Trainnet® allows you to control virtually any sub-systems such as HVAC, lights, displays or sensors. Trainnet® can also be used for applications such as the control of doors, the management of passenger information systems or the monitoring of train speed, traction and brakes. This makes Trainnet® a powerful Train Control and Management System (TCMS) which can be seen as the brain of the train, allowing you to automate train operations and monitoring. The control and diagnostic of sub-systems can be partially or fully automated, depending on the needs. See train illustration below for more examples.

Automation improves passenger comfort. Good examples are the automation of HVAC and lighting, ensuring optimal temperature and appropriate lighting in the train at all time. In addition, train fleet management and maintenance is facilitated by the automation of the collection and analysis of diagnostic data.

Improving train reliability with Trainnet® also prevents train immobilization of performance variations. This helps the operator to maximize train availability, timely operations and thus improves customer satisfaction.

Trainnet® may include interactive displays for drivers and train managers enabling them to monitor and control the train sub-systems. Information can also be sent wirelessly to the depot, for instance diagnostic data for quicker and easier maintenance. Trainnet® reduces manual work, allows faster response time and improved performance.

In addition, our technology allows operators to adjust transport capacities to passenger demands by adding or removing train sets or coaches: thanks to automatic train inauguration, the train is quickly and automatically configured and ready to resume operations. This is especially important to optimise train capacities between and during peak times, for cost-efficiency. Other protocols such as train certification or brake testing can also be automated to make operations easier, faster and safer.


As described above, the Trainnet® TCMS provides in-depth diagnostic information in real-time to the driver and maintenance depot. The status of sub-systems is constantly monitored and warnings issued when limits are crossed. It is also possible to program the TCMS to automatically take corrective actions or provide instructions when a problem arises.

The number of maintenance claims can be significantly reduced, preventive maintenance rationalized, response time improved and repairs speeded up. In other words, it helps you save money and maximize train availability.

Trainnet® systems are recognized for their high reliability. Implementing redundancy at both the hardware and software levels enables you to reduce the risks of failure even further: when a system fails another automatically takes over, thus dramatically reducing risks of train immobilisation. The Trainnet® technology allows for using multiple bus technologies simultaneously when implementing redundancy. Automation (read above) also contributes to improve safety as it limits manual operations, reducing the risks of human error. Trainnet® also allows a number of safety applications, including the monitoring of speed, bearing temperature and lateral vibration (SIL certified).

Video surveillance systems are becoming rather standard equipment for trains, improving passenger’s and driver’s safety. Trainnet® can fully integrate and control CCTV systems as well as emergency intercoms. Finally, the Trainnet® Event Recorder or Juridical Recording unit (JRU) can be used to protect critical train-borne information.


As mentioned previously, Trainnet® can also be used as Passenger Information Systems (PIS) and Public Announcement Systems (PA). No need for a separate system. An automated PIS/PA system can be created to provide travel information and safety messages in a timely manner via displays, audio announcements and mobile devices. Travel information enables passengers to plan their journey better and is an important satisfaction factor. Communications can include: station names, line-maps, schedules and real-time traffic conditions updates and so on. Infotainment (e.g. news, weather forecast, ads) can also be displayed to enhance customer satisfaction and help generate additional revenues through advertisement.

Trainnet® provides you with unparalleled freedom as its development is based on open source software. You can freely develop your own applications or let EKE do it for you. Most importantly, you own the intellectual property rights and can also integrate third party system and applications if you wish: you have full control and are not tied up with a single provider or technology.
